Discontinue aspirin
and any medications containing aspirin for two weeks prior to your surgical appointment, unless instructed by your physician not to discontinue this medication.
Discontinue Advil
or any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication 3-5 days prior to your surgical appointment. You may substitute Tylenol for these medications.
Discontinue Vitamin E and Fish oils
one week prior to your surgical appointment.
DO NOT drink alcohol
for at least 36 hours prior to surgery.
Inform this office if you are taking any other anticoagulant medication, i.e., Plavix, Coumadin, etc. Please inform our office of any
allergies to medications
.
MEDICATIONS Dr. Neda Prescribes
will be sent to your pharmacy 1-3 days prior to surgery, (sometimes the morning of). Please notify the office if you would like an oral sedative such as valium. Typically an antibiotic, a pain med (usually 800mg Motrin), and a prescription mouth rinse is sent and should be started after the surgery. The mouth rinse will be started 24 hours after surgery, all other meds start immediately.
Take all routine medications as directed by your physician. Please inform this office of all routine medications you are currently taking.
Blood pressure medication
is important to continue taking. If BP is 120/80 or higher we will have to reschedule the surgery and obtain a medical clearance before rescheduling.
Plan to rest at home the remainder of the day and the following day after your surgical appointment. Some may return to work if as long as you are feeling well and not physical in your job.
If you are having sedation
, DO NOT eat after midnight the night before and stay
hydrated
. You may eat at a light meal prior to your surgical appointment if you are not having sedation.
Following surgery you should have cool liquids for your next three meals. Protein shakes, Ensure, ice cream, and yogurt are good choices.
If you are having
laser surgery or tissue grafts
you will be on a liquid diet for three days following surgery
.
If you wish to take an oral sedative, such as Valium or if your surgery is
with IV sedation, you MUST have someone (an escort 21 or older) who can drive you home and get you settled in once you arrive home . IV sedation patients must NOT eat after midnight the night before, but must stay hydrated and drink plenty of water, (even right up to the time of surgery)
.
Only if you are
not taking an oral sedative or having sedation

Instructions Following Oral Surgery
For Extraction and Implant sites: Bite on gauze for half an hour then change gauze every half hour for an hour and a half
Keep fingers and tongue away from the operated area. No hot liquids such as soup, tea or coffee in the first 24 hours. No carbonated liquids (coke, sprite or any soft drinks).
DO NOT DRINK THROUGH A STRAW
Do not rinse your mouth for the first 24 hours, although it is permissible to drink room temperature or lukewarm liquids.
Smoking should be avoided for 24-48 hours.
DO NOT BRUSH
the surgical area for 7 days, or until we see you for your post-operative visit.
Starting tomorrow
, rinse your mouth frequently with Perioguard/Chlorhexidine
(prescribed by the Doctor) Continue the rinses for 10 days.
If you have any discomfort, take whatever you normally take for a headache every few hours. If necessary, the Doctor will prescribe stronger medication for you, usually 800mg Motrin. If
given an antibiotic
please take the antibiotic until it is finished,
not everyone is given an antibiotic
.
Cold or lukewarm liquids may be taken for the first 4 - 6 hours. After this, any soft food is permissible.
For Tissue Graft and LANAP
procedures, plan to be on a liquid diet for three days. No hot liquids such as soup, tea or coffee in the first 24 hours. No carbonated liquids (coke, sprite or any soft drinks).
DO NOT DRINK THROUGH A STRAW
.
It is normal for saliva to streak with blood for the day. If any heavy bleeding is present, fold the gauze and place it directly on the bleeding area. Maintain firm pressure by biting for 20 minutes. The gauze may be substituted by a wet tea bag. The acids in the tea have a clotting effect.
Swelling and discoloration is to be expected, usually reaching its maximum two days after surgery. It will disappear gradually and is not cause for concern. If desired, ice packs may be applied for the first 4 - 6 hours only. Alternating 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off.
If sutures (stitches) are required, they will typically dissolve in a week’s time. You will need to be evaluated by our office in approximately five to seven days following surgery. An appointment will be made for you.
Do not hesitate to call the office if you have any questions.
